Do you sometimes wonder if you should get around to rejigging your website, but other priorities get in the way? Here are some cues that an update could be on the cards.

1. The design is not as spunky as it seemed when the site was first built

Websites – just like fashion – have eras. Remember the boxed-in, squashed sites with columns on the right, and lots of tiny text? The internal pages with tediously long text that went on for Africa? Plus, large banners that meant you had to scroll before you could see any real information?

Perhaps you’ve seen a competitor website that looks clean and attractive, or you’re yearning for certain web design features that are popular? If your site is no longer visually attractive to you, then your potential customers probably feel the same way. Sight is the most important of all our senses. Design, colours, images and fonts are essential to make a good positive impression.

2. Your business has changed

The only constant in life is change. Your business and products have undoubtedly changed over the past few years. Your site may not truly reflect today’s reality. Your website is your digital business card – often the key reference point for existing and new clients. Does your current site reflect changes in direction or highlight new products?

3. Team pages aren’t reflective of your current business structure

Particularly among professional firms, the ‘Meet the Team’ page is one of the top three pages. Does the layout of your ‘About’ and ‘Team’ pages showcase your size and market position? Does it filter enquiries to relevant team members? Do you make the journey clear for where visitors could go after they’ve read the content on these pages?

4. It’s a hassle to manage seasonal specials and blog posts

Seasonal offers are a great way to spike revenue. Blog posts are a key tool to demonstrate your ethos. These are both simple, cost-effective ways of stimulating interest in your site. Are you able to make these changes quickly and with no fuss, or is this a daunting and time-consuming process?

5. It’s getting harder to rank well on Google

Google – like all tech companies – is constantly changing and “improving” the customer experience – sometimes at your expense. As Google changes its algorithms, factors such as page speed, responsiveness, user experience, search optimisation techniques, and the quality of content get different prioritisation. It is given (by Google) that your website has to change to take these factors into account. If not, your rank will start to slip. If you are not ranking in the top three of page one for at least 20% of your chosen search phrases, you are missing out on business.

6. You are ranking well, but the phones are not ringing

Turning website traffic into leads is part art and part science. If a site is difficult to use or tired, customers will “bounce” away. Even a more recent site can yield disappointing results. The stats don’t lie. A good site needs intuitive and easy navigation with a clear journey and engaging calls to action.

Analytics highlights quickly where the opportunities are. The answer is not clear cut, but by developing a plan, trialling variations, the results can be significantly improved. Who doesn’t want 25% more leads?

7. Information is spread throughout your site

We are getting lazier. The idea that if the client wants it, they will trawl for it, is no longer relevant with today’s short attention spans. Ideally, the customer should be able to access the info they are looking for within three clicks – or even on the page they land on. Landing pages allow people to access specific info about the subject they are searching for, on the page they arrive on, and go all the way through to complete an enquiry. This reduces “click-time” and improves the experience.

8. Long loading time

How long does it take your website to load? 3 seconds? Longer? For every second beyond, you lose 15% of visitors. The reasons for slow page speed include old technology, heavy themes, redirects, too many plugs ins, large images. Time to speed up!

9. The mobile experience could be sharper

On average, more than 50% of traffic is generated through mobile users. The performance of your mobile site is even more important than your desktop version. How does your website perform on smaller screens? Are there mobile-specific features to make it easy for your customers to read the information and to contact you? Not only is your mobile site appearance important for instant leads, Google will also base the ranking of your site on your mobile presence.

Which factors resonate most with you? We should add the need for consistent web updates to the certainties of taxes and death, in our world where Google is King and keeps changing the goal posts. When you’re ready to explore upgrading your site, our digital detectives would be delighted to hear about your vision, and share some nuggets on new technology and design that addresses the signs above.

Whilst the year has just started Google lay in wait quietly to spring a surprise on us. While you were enjoying your summer vacation on the beach, the Google-bots army updated the algorithm.

In the article, we will review the main algorithm changes and see how you can recover your search visibility if you have been affected by this update.

What’s new?

Nothing, to be honest. Google is still on its crusade against low-quality websites. While the last update in March 2018 focused on “mobile first”, the new algorithm seems to focus on “Quality Of Content”.

Because there wasn’t any official communication by Google concerning this update, I use the word seems since the search community is still evaluating how this update affects web visibility.

However, the most affected sites are news sites, health, law & government, beauty & fitness, and vehicles.

But what is high-quality and low-quality content? How can we identify the quality of our content? In order to understand and evaluate whether your content is of high quality, we recommend to review the Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness “E-A-T guidelines”.

5 keys to recover your search visibility – Less is more!

High-Quality Content:

Avoid long and boring paragraphs; structure your content in an easy way to read.

Make sure your main keyword is included in the title, description, and H1.

Include semantic keywords and LSI keywords.

Remember that if the content isn’t really useful for the user it is not going to help your search visibility.

Fix your ‘Zombie’ pages:

Zombie pages (e.g. pages with old content, and poor performance) have a negative effect on your search visibility

Classify “Zombie” pages based on the performance (bounce rate, avg. time on page, page views, exit pages, etc)

Fix the pages that are useful for your users with new content or structure; erase everything else. Update the sitemap and submit to Google.

Mobile First:

Keep improving your mobile user’s experience.

Include useful functional analysis of your website.

Think of your website as an app and try to cover all user needs for different levels of user readiness.

Page Speed:

The faster the better.

Fix your technical SEO:

Fix your crawl errors especially the metadata ones.

In conclusion there’s nothing really new. Google has always focused on delivering high-quality results, so implementing content quality as a ranking factor was just a matter of time.

So, embrace the new SEO philosophy (Quality over quantity) and stay away from all those old and Jurassic SEO strategies (Quantity over quality, tons of useless content, blackhat SEO, infinity keyword repetitions, infinity internal links, infinity pages, etc…)

SMEs are rapidly getting on the tech train to create bespoke Apps for their business and workforce.

Fed-up with traditional workplace practices that repeatedly result in time-consuming mistakes and frustrated staff, more and more SMEs are developing private apps for their own use as internal solutions, circumventing expensive market software.

What is a private App?
Not private as in “dating” or “personal” but Apps that are totally private from the outside world. You won’t find them on Google Play or the AppStore; they exist on their own cloud-based, private network which means that they synch instantly with all users. There can be as many or as few users as desired and the Apps are tailored to meet the exact specifications of the client.

What does a private App do?
Essentially, exactly what you want it to do. Examples include: pre-work machine checks for H&S compliance, company-wide internal communication systems, monitoring of stock movements etc. In most cases, we build a custom solution to a problem which has been bothering you for a while and tends to involve large paper trails. Whilst there might be potential solutions already existing in the market, either they tend to be not suitable, very expensive or both.

Why are they so popular?
We all enjoy the sensation of being able to do our work productively, look forward to the next challenge and want to be confident that what is going on around us is being done correctly. When staff are constantly being asked to re-do a task or sort out a mess, it is soul-destroying and morale-sapping. It is not surprising that these tools are so popular with staff in general. Additionally, the cloud-storage means that all data is stored automatically, instantly recoverable and history can be recorded if desired.

What do they cost?
The great advantage of not going through a third-party distributor – like Apple who has a host of rules you have to follow – is that you can concentrate on the fundamentals of the tool rather than a glossy look and feel. That does not mean that it cannot have a professional look, but we tend to build for practical people who want practical solutions foremost. This strips out much of the cost and time from a project. On average our builds have cost around $10,000 and anecdotally we understand they pay for themselves within the first year.

An examples: Mobstar
A simple app designed to replace a traditional whiteboard schematic of a farm, that showed where Mobs and Feeders were located. An instant hit with farmhands as it removed paper notes and synched instantly and accurately over a large, high-country station. It has since grown to record stock movements, mergers and crops on the farm and will soon monitor Fertilizers and sprays.

Other requests include: the digital warehousing of over 3,000 boxes of onions in 2 warehouses, time-sheet entry apps for foreign staff with multiple languages, creating trail walks for high-country trampers to navigate farms correctly and even creating a family tree of the world’s captive gorillas.

Got an idea?
Then give Alexanders a call. We will be only too happy to walk you through the feasibility of your idea and give open and honest appraisals of its strengths and weaknesses as well as an indicative idea on costs.

The Chinese Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) has a history of nearly 4000 years and is the most important annual celebration for Chinese people.

Rather than being a religious festival, the Chinese Spring festival was traditionally a time to honor deities as well as ancestors within China.

Most businesses shut down because, like Christmas, Chinese New Year is a public holiday, and most people take up to 10 days off. However, because it is not a religious ceremony, it is legal to keep your business open. Most shopping malls stay open to boost sales, because people give gifts to ring out the old year, and ring in the New Year.
“Chinese New Year” is not the same day each year like Christmas on our Gregorian calendar. Although it occurs on January 1st of the Chinese lunar calendar, this usually falls on a different date each year between late January and mid February. This year it is on Tuesday 5th Feb.

The Spring Festival public holiday period lasts for seven days. Some people choose to combine a few days of their annual leave with this long period to make it a 10 day or two-week holiday if they are going to travel. Most people only get seven days’ holiday. Chinese workers don’t typically get any holidays at Christmas unless they work in a foreign capital enterprise.

Due to the uneven pace of development of Eastern and Western China – and because young people make a living in big eastern coastal cities while the older generation enjoy their retirement life back home – it is the time that people travel from where they work to where their parents are. Chinese Spring Festival is the largest annual mass human migration in the world.

Regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the New Year vary widely. But like Christmas, the evening preceding Chinese New Year’s Day is frequently regarded as an occasion for Chinese families to gather for a family feast.

Food consumed varies among regions and what the traditional favourites are in your family. Ivy Cui, Chinese Digital Manager at Alexanders Digital Marketing says “my favorite festival dish is Sliced Spiced Beef dipped in Vinegar and Chilli sauce. Scrumptious!”

Some people also make the effort to make a long distance trip. On “Double Eleven Singles Day” (November 11th), Fliggy (an important itinerary website) sells discounted airline tickets or travel packages for the period of Spring Festival. Singles Day is written “11.11”. In China it is known as as “bare sticks holiday” because of how it is written numerically.

As a side-note, Singles Day began as an anti-Valentine’s Day in the 1990’s when students at Nanjing University started celebrating in their single dorm. It was then adopted by e-commerce giant Alibaba (China’s Amazon equivalent) in 2009. The commercial opportunity was spotted by Alibaba who began launching “Double 11” deals, and it has now become a day when everyone – regardless of their single status – buys themselves gifts. It is also a great shopping time to fill the gap between the National Holiday in October and the Christmas season.

Ivy shares that Chinese people really like buying products that are not made in China on their Spring Festival overseas trip. Most retail businesses will have Spring Festival sales accordingly.

The year of the pig

2019 is the year of Pig. The pig is the twelfth of the 12-year cycle animals, which appear in the Chinese zodiac calendar. There are five types of Pigs, named after the Chinese elements. In order, they are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, and Earth.

Marketing opportunities

Because of the special time of the year, the Chinese super-app Wechat carries messages that we don’t normally see at other times with news about what’s happening. Promotions include but are not limited to: airline tickets sales (in tandem with third party OTA (online travel agent) platforms), ideas for special purchases for the Spring Festival to take home, and travel safety guidelines.

Some businesses also run a red packet campaign with Wechat Red Packet (Red Packet is a monetary gift given during holidays or special occasions like weddings, graduation and having a baby). It works in many ways, such as:

Receive a random number of red packets with any purchase;

Scan the QR code to receive a red packet (voucher) before you buy (WeChat features an online wallet that you can load money into, and use as a payment method online or at point of sale)

Invite your WeChat friends to share links and pictures to receive red packets

Invite your friends to help you on getting the airline or train tickets through ticket snatching software, which increase the chance of obtaining a ticket

Gifts vary from food and drinks that can be used for dinner on [Chinese] New Year’s Eve and the following days, to clothes, shoes, supermarket deposit cards, appliances, furniture, or just money (“red packets”). Workers often give valuable gifts to their boss or team leader in order to show respect. Such gifts range from food, liquor, drinks, cigarettes, or expensive fruit (cherries from NZ, pineapple from Thailand, oranges from America) through to shopping mall gift cards and travel packages.
There are a lot of festival decorations put up around Chinese New Year. Dragons may come out when it is the Year of Dragon. The base color is typically red and yellow. The main themes include “Spring”, “Animal of the year”, “New Year”, and “May you be happy and prosperous”.

One of the essential decorations is a Spring Festival “couplet” that you put on either side of your front door. Traditionally, the messages were written by a brush pen on red paper, and put up on New Year’s Eve before dinner. Now people print them to make them prettier. Ivy recalls “my grandfather used to write the couplet banners and I would put them up with my cousins. It marks the official start of Spring Festival.” Chinese put a lot of thought into the content of Spring Festival couplets which are poetic, with powerful and clever maxims and axioms.

If you’d like to know more about how your business can reach Chinese, please get in touch with Rachel or Ivy Cui (after she returns from New Year festival in China with her family).

When supplied with a range of file formats for your new logo, it can be difficult to know which file to supply to your supplier. Here are some tips to work out which file type to use or to send to a supplier.

Logo for websites & email signatures:

Typically a png is a good choice if your logo has text on it. If not a jpeg is fine. On the web, there’s a colourway called RGB. RBG is a range of colours with specific hex numbers that programmers can enter to portray that colour on the computer screen e.g. red is #FF0000. As each computer is calibrated differently, you can’t guarantee a consistent result for how the colour appears on-screen the way you can with Pantone colours.

For signage:

Signwriters generally like a .ai file which means Adobe Illustrator. This format is a vector that will scale up without getting pixelated.

For printed stationery:

For your business cards, letterhead and comps slips (if you still use them in this digital age), the printer will want a higher res format, in perhaps a .jpeg or .eps file. If you’re on a PC, generally .eps won’t open. It tends to be created by designers on Macs. A printer will generally be able to open an eps.
There are a couple of different colour profiles. ‘Pantone’ generally refers to a code of a specific ink shade. So, if your stationery is, say, two or three colours (e.g. black, blue and yellow), then your stationery may be printed on a machine that uses three exact paint colours. ‘cmyk’ stands for cyan, magenta, yellow and black. If your logo has a colour image or uses four colours, it may be printed on a ‘four colour’ machine. This is a deceptive name because it really means full colour but the full spectrum of colours are made by mixing up four pots of blue, pink, yellow and black inks.

Brochures

You’ll generally need a jpeg or eps but in high res, and ideally saved in a CMYK colourway, since most brochures have full colour images. If your brochure is say just two colours, then you can get away with a Pantone colourway.
Is a pdf file okay?
PDF is not ideal for inserting into a document, but it is useful if you are sending a file to also send a pdf which can be opened to validate how the file should look. A pdf requires extra time for a designer to reverse out against black, for example. However most graphic designers can change a pdf into another file format. If it is a low-res pdf, then it may not be suitable for using in brochures and will look pixelated. File size is a good indication of whether it’s a high or low res image.

Driven by technology advances, convenience and perhaps even laziness, more and more consumers are conducting internet searches through voice commands.

Gone are the days of typing in all your search queries. In turn, the rise of voice search influences how website content should be optimized to reach new and existing customers online.

Who uses voice search?

Voice search stats from Global Web Index:

27% of the global online population is using voice search on mobile.

34% of internet users say they’re interested in purchasing a voice-controlled smart assistant.

70% of voice tech users are concerned about the internet eroding their personal privacy.

The rise of voice search brings some search visibility off search engines themselves. Certainly, voice search results are greatly influenced by the device and digital assistant being used; be it Google Home/Now, Cortana, Amazon Echo/Alexa, or Apple’s Siri.

Amazon Echo vs Google Home Assistant

The Amazon Echo primarily responds to purchase queries with answers from items for sale on the Amazon network. In contrast, Google Home assistant delivers results that are largely similar to written Google results.

At Alexanders, we have been experimenting with the Google Home Assistant. Some of our clients have a strong presence in the results – great evidence of our SEO work to date.

At this stage, we still see a strong link between top rankings on written and voice search results on Google.

Over 25% of US searches are now voice-based and attention is shifting to how websites should evolve to rank well for voice searches.

Meanwhile, back at home in New Zealand, voice search volume is not yet at the 25% mark.

The kiwi accent presents a challenge for digital assistants, which may be why uptake has been slower here than abroad. However, the Australian accent has recently been incorporated for some devices, and it is rumored that Google will be rolling out voice recognition for NZ accents very shortly.

Yet another acronym has entered the digital marketing scene, joining SEM, SEO, PPC, & CRO in the digital acronym hall of fame – AEO.

What is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) in search marketing?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimisation. It is the process of optimising your content to appear in a search result as the single answer provided. The ‘one true answer’ could appear in an answer box or as an audio response to a voice search query. For example, you can think of things like “what is the boiling point of water at sea level in celsius” = 100 degrees.

How can you start preparing your website for AEO? Structured data, Google maps, Apple maps, Bing maps listings and many of the other factors that apply to general SEO all contribute to Answer Engine Optimisation.

Adding schema markup could boost news audio results

Adding schema markup is a process of labeling content on your site to identify the type of information provided. Then, search engines can use schema markup to identify what portion of your content is appropriate as a voice response.

Currently, the Google Assistant uses speakable structured data to answer news related searches on smart speakers. When users ask for news about a specific topic, the Google Assistant suggests up to three articles from around the web and supports audio playback for sections in the article which have ‘speakable’ structured data.

What increases your chance of appearing in speakable results?

While currently, to be eligible to appear in speakable news results, your site must be a valid news site in the US, other content can rank on voice searches now.

Brief content, with up to 5 short steps as a solution or answer, has a good chance of ranking well.

As you can see, voice search is an emerging and important part of online behavior. It takes time and technical knowledge to build your visibility in voice search. Drop Mateo a line and he can evaluate your website to determine which different types of Schema Markup would be suitable for your website.

Voice Reviews: A new channel for digital word of mouth

In the past 2 years, videos with the word ‘review’ in the title had more than 50,000 hours of viewing time. If you’re on the move, Google may deliver voice reviews rather than web page reviews. Google says you can get up to a 17% increase in conversion from your Google Ads if you have the reviews star rating.

How do you get a decent online star rating?

Shopper Approved is our recommended rating system. It handles text as well as voice reviews making it super easy to manage this otherwise tedious task. Talk to Mateo about getting this set up (and check it out on the Alexanders’ home page).

The quantity of business and organizations with an online presence is growing year by year. Meanwhile, the first page of Google is becoming more diverse with a range of ways to rank.

2: It’s a faster way to gain traffic

Building your organic rank takes time and expertise. In contrast, if you’re willing to spend some cash and outbid your competitors, Ads can instantly put you at the top of the results for relevant search terms.

3: Ability to rank for a high quantity of keywords

Because you can set up your campaign structured in different ad groups, you can focus on, and track, more keywords per landing page. The average click-through rate of a paid ad is 2%, yet ads in the first position earn an average click-through rate of almost 8% (Clever Clicks 2017)

4: Ads look less like ads and more like a classic organic result

60% of consumers don’t know a Google advert when they see one (Smart Insights 2017). This started a couple of years back with the introduction of Google green ads.

PPC is not free but it can deliver amazing results

I’ve seen clients increase their lead generation by 20% – 45% with Google Ads (across different industries).

Keep in mind that your website or landing page plays a critical role in the success of your ad campaigns. If your website is not tailored to the target user or reference the target keywords, it’s unlikely to convert.

In contrast to other advertising, where payment is based on CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions), in Google Ads, you just pay for actual clicks. This is a really big advantage because it’s easy to check and track results.

You are going to need a depth of technical knowledge to set up your Google Ads to get real results. Don’t burn your money with each click. Remember, that each click costs you money. Use it wisely. This is where professionals have the expertise to tune the campaign to squeeze more out of each dollar.

It can take up to 3 months to gather data and optimise performance on Google Ads

If you set up your campaign correctly and have conversion tracking set up for your goals (measuring which keywords turn into enquiries/sales), leads should flow through. However, it takes time – often three months – to get enough data to work out which keywords are more frequently used, and which ones turn into sales.

After three months, the campaign should be re-organised to favour the words which are more lucrative, while reducing your bids on lower performing phrases.

You are going to need a depth of technical knowledge to set up your Google Ads campaigns and optimize them to get the best results. Don’t burn your money with each click; remember that each click costs you money, so you use it wisely. This is where professionals have the expertise to tune the campaign to squeeze more out of each dollar.

How much do Google Ads cost?

The average click is around $1 to $5 on the search network, depending on the industry and competition. In highly competitive industries or locations, a click could cost $17-50. You can edit your bids and click cost. You will probably want to pay more for really targeted words (which are often popular with your competitors too). We find it exciting when we find a variation of a word that is lucrative, but not competitive – so your cost ends up being lower for a good lead.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) Advantages

Search engines are constantly evolving. The algorithms are getting smarter. Search optimisers and webmasters alike are shifting their focus to the user.

Gone are the days when some keyword stuffing and 10,000 cheap links from a faraway land pretty much guaranteed you the number one spot.

Search engines like Google and Bing now look at:

The performance of your site

Your ability to answer the user’s question

The mobile experience

(Review March 2018 algorithm update).

Organic traffic still is the main channel for visitors and conversions on the majority of websites and is the best long-term investment for your website based on our experience of conversion rates to sale.

Your efforts to build a quality site all will work towards enhancing your brand while generating leads in both the short and long term.

Below the Google My Business results and map pack (an important part of your overall SEO efforts) we can see the organic result format without the “Ad” symbol.

SEO still is very relevant for the following reasons:

1: You don’t have to pay for each click – although you might need to pay a digital marketer to help edit your site. It takes longer (Adwords is instant; seo takes around three months before you see real results), but there are no hard pay-per-click costs, and you’re not competing on a bid basis with your competitors.
2: Successful SEO results in highly qualified traffic and a higher conversion rate to sale than Google Ads (in our experience).
3: In some markets, the consumer’s eye is trained to avoid ads so the organic results become more relevant and trusted for those consumers.

SEO doesn’t have a click cost or media placement fee, but it requires upfront effort, maintenance and staying in your position is never guaranteed. Every little step climbing up the search ranking ladder takes time. In order to see real results, you should have advanced technical knowledge, a team with some programming skills, as well as an understanding of your competitive landscape.

So, who is the winner?

It’s a draw! Every business has different goals, strategies, and resources.

If you can and if you have time, apply both Google Ads and SEO as part of your digital marketing plan. Search is not always linear. Behaviour is not always “see ad or search result, click, then buy.” If someone sees your ad, doesn’t act on it, but then does a product category search and you don’t come up, then you are kissing the lead goodbye. Similarly, if someone does a category search, and your competitors dominate results, you may lose some viewers to ad clicks.
Customer behavior is always changing. The way we search for a product or a service is evolving every day. PPC (pay per click) & SEO should work together to achieve different goals and reach different customers.
Whilst you can try and run Google Ads or do SEO by yourself (Google has lots of material and free learning programs), if you don’t have the time – or you want to ensure your marketing outranks competitors – feel free to contact us at Alexanders.

By Rachel Alexander, Chinese marketing agency owner based in Christchurch.

There are many ways to reach Chinese – including those residing in New Zealand, tourists and those living in China.

A typical pattern of Chinese behaviour around advertising is:

see an ad on WeChat e.g. WeChat moments (because they spend 2.5 hours a day on WeChat on average, with 30% spending 3.5 hours a day)

visit the company’s official or unofficial WeChat account

get in touch in Mandarin via the contact section of the WeChat account. It is common to have “questions answered between 9am and 5pm” to indicate it’s a work situation and set the expectation that queries will not be answered in the evening.

WeChat is certainly not your only option, though I would advocate: “when in Rome, do as the Romans do”. I will outline other options soon.

Chinese are accustomed to quick responses on WeChat; it’s the Chinese standard communication tool, much the way we use email. Therefore, your WeChat account should be monitored – especially regularly around the time any advertising is done.

Problem #1: I don’t have any Chinese staff.

Never fear; the Alexanders team can monitor this for you around the campaign time and translate any enquiries, bridging the gap until you get to the point that warrants having more regular Chinese speakers on your team. Or if you have a Chinese colleague, we can help to set up a WeChat account and they can monitor the responses.

Problem #2: I don’t have a WeChat account.

A good way to start is to advertise on someone else’s WeChat account (there are several kiwi accounts that command a large local following), driving enquiries not to your WeChat page but to your website.

Set up an unofficial account. This is easier and a short-term option, but it is harder to find you online. Also Chinese are skeptical of fake accounts, so it is not ideal.

Set up an official account. Ideal, but takes more effort and there’s more red tape than Western social media.

Set yourself up with a local WeChat personal profile (individual).

Choose another option (see below)

P.S Alexanders Digital Marketing can help with all five options above.

Problem #3: I don’t know how to measure effectiveness.

Chinese measure success largely by the number of people who make contact via WeChat after the ads. This allows you to check which kinds of offers work best. If you are not that far along to be able to get WeChat enquiries, then you can measure traffic to your website. However, bear in mind that Google Analytics does not always track well all traffic from TenCent group (WeChat owners) or other Chinese sources. And being different giants, they have different algorithms and methods of measuring actions. Don’t let that put you off though – you can still have a specific landing page, or create a unique form, or count product sales. And it’s good to make a start rather than procrastinate and not do anything.

Heard of chat bots? Automated answering is very much a part of WeChat. You can create automated answers to a huge range of questions, providing instant response to your most frequently-asked questions around hours, address, shipping.

WeChat is not the only way to reach Chinese.

Other methods include pay per click ads on Baidu – the major search engine, more suited to reaching Chinese in China – paid promo’s on Weibo (like Twitter), coupons on AliDiscover (if you have Alipay set up), ads on news sites that are the equivalent of Stuff, NZ-based Chinese radio (skewed to an older audience) or print ads in local Chinese publications (in Chch, Auckland or NZ-wide).

A: the level of English is higher among younger Chinese and lower among older Chinese. I have a lot of Chinese staying in my AirBnB and few are fluent – typically there is only one person in the group with reasonable English and sometimes it has been the 9 year old child that is the translator! So if you are targeting NZ-based Chinese, having some translated content on your .co.nz site is useful. However if you are targeting visitors coming from China, Baidu does not really show .co.nz sites – they are very slow to download and Google is banned over there. Baidu favours Mandarin sites hosted in China. You have to have a registered business in China to get a .cn domain, so the popular choice is to have a com, Chinese-only site hosted in Hong Kong. However, that alone will not make you rank in Baidu. You will have to do some search engine optimisation. Yes it’s a long-term game.
P.S. Alexanders can help with translation, building, hosting and search optimisation for Hong Kong Mandarin sites.

There are both digital and print options.

1. Advertise in free Chinese print magazines for locals.

There are three magazines that are free to take at the main Chinese supermarket. One is produced monthly and is like a 30-page mini magazine in four colour. The other two are light on content but good for reaching 50-60 year olds and seniors. Ad campaigns cost under $1k for media placement (plus time to design, translate, and book ad).

2. Post on popular digital forums

Younger Chinese follow a Christchurch-based WeChat account so you could do WeChat moment advertising. There are three popular sub-accounts with separate themes. This entails supplying 4-9 photos and up to 500 words (only the first para shows, and you click to read more). Most new Chinese businesses use these channels to get visibility and raise awareness. The plus is that you don’t need to worry about graphic design (we can help you to translate).

There is another Christchurch Wechat account popular among mums – there is a weekly What’s going on in the weekend post for Mums showing where they can take their kids, current Christchurch activities.

Due to the fact that the majority of Chinese in NZ are based in Auckland, some of the national Chinese media will predominately reach an Auckland Chinese audience. Census stats show that residents are largely clustered in two main areas of Auckland.

Clients report a stronger response from digital media. There is a large Chinese newspaper with digital advertising options, and a major digital media that reaches 80% of all Chinese in New Zealand.

You could do a small campaign on one of these for $1-2k (plus design costs) and get multiple placements on both platforms for $4-5k.

Naturally there are specific WeChat accounts geared to Aucklanders enabling options to target based on group themes e.g. parents. If you don’t yet have your own WeChat account, you can post on another that has a large following.

More sophisticated targeting options open up when you do place a campaign via TenCent group: specify age, gender, demographic targeting and interest groups. Typically campaigns such as this require a $10k plus spend, but talk to us about a smaller $2.5k campaign by joining in with other local advertisers to reach the $10k minimum.

AliDiscover promotions are easy to set up if you have AliPay. People with AliPay on their phones will see geo-targetted offers near them.

There are a range of local Chinese newspapers, and a real-estate specific publication. I’ve been told by a Mike Greer agent that Chinese like square, symmetrical houses with no doors opposite each other! TenCent (WeChat owners) prohibit advertising of foreign real estate, but real estate agents can still have a WeChat account.

The Chinese radio station has an older skew – not “hip” for younger Chinese, according to our Chinese 30-something writer.

Ready to roll but not sure where to start? We are happy to co-ordinate a media plan and translate or design content based on elements provided by you. Talk to Rachel or our Chinese Account Manager on 03 3488 477 or contact us via email.

Mafengwo is an important site for tourism operators that features articles showing pictorial itineraries with explanations based on an individual’s real experiences. Articles are normally titled “3 days in Queenstown”, “5 days in Sydney” etc. They include feedback that help people plan a trip e.g. “If you’re not very adventurous, then two days in Queenstown is enough” and useful information such as where to get a bus card, how to get to the airport. You can also book accommodation and flights on the site.

There’s a ranking of all contributors. You can see a contributor’s posts, and who gets the most reviews. As a result, it’s highly trusted by Chinese. The itineraries with the most reviews get shown first.

Information is provided by destination, not by individual activity (because this would be too short).

Naturally, there are celebrities who have been paid to write itineraries. You can follow someone for a long time and see where they went.

Mafengwo has been on the market for a long time – it is the main player.

Alexanders can help tourism operators to write up itineraries with a personal touch so it doesn’t look like an ad. For example, a local operator may arrange a group of local providers to provide free entry/accommodation/dinner for our Chinese writer to come and experience, taking photos and then writing up the article based on an authentic experience.

There is nothing second hand. South (a Chinese marketing group run by Chch Airport) has a store on Alibaba for goods produced in the South Island (contact CIAL for more info). You can search by products or shop name in Taobao. It will come up with a whole list of people selling the product. You can pay more to rank higher. If there’s not many others in your category, you don’t need to pay extra. When sorting, you can choose to rank items by price, highest sales volume, free shipping, and the most trustworthy provider. Buyers gets points for purchases. Trusted buyers have more points than others (more experience than others). Products that have more trusted buyers, have a greater trust score.

There are a lot of fake accounts, and fake buyers who do fake purchases but the reviews they leave and their points and id’s reveal them as fakes. It is a mission to find genuine products on TaoBao. Don’t buy fake reviews! There’s a whole industry and business of making fake accounts. The fake accounts and reviews are called the “Water Army”.
If you have customers in Europe, or recruit from Europe, this issue is particularly relevant. All website owners should be proactive. Even if your target market is not in Europe, your site is still accessible by people all over the world (that’s why they called it the world wide web).

On 25 May 2018, new EU privacy laws came into effect to protect the personal data of European citizens wherever they may roam online. The laws cover the ways in which organizations use personal data and basically require consent for the collection and usage of personal information. It also gives people in Europe the right to request information on how an organization may be using their data and ask for it to be removed.

The GDPR does not apply to anonymized personal data, which means an individual can no longer be identified from the information alone.

It specifically applies to data that can be traced back to identify an individual. This includes but is not limited to; the person’s name, contact details, financial information, medical records, images and videos of the person, location data, their IP address. This applies even if they can be identified by combining different pieces of information that alone would not reveal the identity of the person. (1)

Why is it so important?

Failing to meet these regulations could result in a fine of up to 20-million euros (that’s over 34-million NZD at the time of writing). For large global companies, fines can be up to 4% of annual turnover if that’s higher than the 20-million.

The GDPR also raises questions about why our data isn’t protected as a given. Why has it taken drastic measures from Europe to get the rest of the world to tighten up privacy controls?

The graph below shows the GDPR’s quick rise to fame since the end of last year. When big companies like Facebook and Google update their privacy policies – people take notice.

This shows a scale of relative search interest for the given region and time. A value of 100 shows the peak popularity of the term (for the GDPR that’s right now). This time last year, the term GDPR had a relative score of 8.

In some ways, this move is similar to what Google did with AdSense back in 2008 when it required publishers to notify users that they were collecting data with cookies. Basically saying ‘Hey, we’re tracking your data, is that ok with you?’ (2)

You don’t have to be in Europe

The new European regulations are far-reaching or ‘extra-terrestrial’. This means not complying could still result in hefty fines even if you’re outside of the European Union.

It’s particularly important for you to comply if you’re selling a product or service to customers anywhere in Europe. The rules apply to anyone collecting European citizen’s information through forms, online sales, or 3rd party plugins such as social media sharing buttons and sharing that or processing it.

What can you do to comply?

At the very minimum:

Setup a double opt-in for newsletters or forms

Install a cookies approval pop-up plugin

Create a privacy policy and explain how you store and use data

Include a note on any forms detailing how you store and use people’s data

Talk to your lawyer to ensure you’re meeting your legal obligations

If your customers are in Europe, it’s imperative you engage a lawyer to ensure that your website and data processing is fully compliant. Even if you’re customers are predominantly in NZ, it’s still worth taking measures to protect your customer’s privacy. There are also considerations for enewsletters that MailChimp explains quite extensively (3).

The recommendations below are not a substitute for legal advice and are just some starting points to get your website on track for data protection. It’s not a one-off fix but will be an ongoing process.

WordPress sites: install a plugin to support GDPR compliance.

WP GDPR Compliance: This plugin has a note in the checkbox text that states by using this form you agree with the storage and handling of your data by this website. This provides proof that a customer gave you their approval for you to collect their details.

https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-gdpr-compliance/

WP GDPR core: This plugin creates a page where users can request access to their own personal data that’s stored on your website. In the backend, you’ll get an overview of the requests users send and you can see which plugins collect personal data. Users who ask to view their personal data will get an email with a unique url on which they can view, update and download their own comments and ask for a removal per comment. You also need an ‘ask for approval’ checkbox.

https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-gdpr-core/

EU Cookie law: informs users that your site has cookies, with a popup for more information and option to lock scripts before acceptance.

Cookie notice: Allows you to customize the cookie message and redirect users to specified page for more cookie information as well as set the cookie expiry

Note: Activating these plugins do not guarantee you fully comply with GDPR. Please contact a GDPR consultant or law firm to assess the necessary measures.

Cookie notification wording could include: “We use Analytics on this site which tracks visits anonymously using cookies. Please close this box to confirm that’s ok with you, or read more in this privacy statement”

Alexanders is actively working on WordPress & Joomla sites to install plugins and privacy/cookie terms pages. Talk to us about implementing a solution. Alexanders has engaged a lawyer who has prepared templates for our clients – if you are interested, talk to us about getting a copy – for a small contribution to our legal fees.
